Lens Model Degeneracy and Cosmological Tests by Strong Gravitational Lensing
We study the relation between the gravitational lensing observables and the lens model and the cosmological parameters. We estimate the sensitivity of the lensing observables to the lens model and to the cosmological parameters. We show that the observables are primarily dependent on the lens model, while the dependence on cosmological parameters is minor (especially so for the dark energy para...
متن کاملGravitational lensing
This is a short and biased review of gravitational lensing with emphasis on the radio and especially VLBI aspects. We briefly explain the basic idea and give a short sketch of the discovery of the first lens before we more systematically discuss the general fields that can be studied with lensing. We intentionally omit the details the average lensing expert would like to see and instead try to ...
متن کاملGravitational Lensing in Astronomy
Deflection of light by gravity was predicted by General Relativity and observationally confirmed in 1919. In the following decades, various aspects of the gravitational lens effect were explored theoretically. Among them were: the possibility of multiple or ring-like images of background sources, the use of lensing as a gravitational telescope on very faint and distant objects, and the possibil...
متن کاملGravitational lensing by gravitational waves
Gravitational lensing by gravitational wave is considered. We notice that although final and initial direction of photons coincide, displacement between final and initial trajectories occurs. This displacement is calculated analytically for the plane gravitational wave pulse. Estimations for observations are discussed.
متن کاملWEIGHTING THE CLUSTERS OF GALAXIES WITH WEAK GRAVITATIONAL LENSING: The problem of the mass-sheet degeneracy
Weak gravitational lensing is considered to be one of the most powerful tools to study the mass and the mass distribution of galaxy clusters. However, weak lensing mass reconstructions are plagued by the so-called mass-sheet degeneracy – the surface mass density κ of the cluster can be determined only up to a degeneracy transformation κ → κ′ = λκ+ (1− λ), where λ is an arbitrary constant. This ...
